Fuel problems

Is it possible to create a taphole in our existing fuel tank?

Answer: Diesel can be affected by fugus, a bacteria, which can cause fuel filters to clog up. Water in the diesel tanks is one of the causes for fungus. This makes it important to drain off any water in the tank. Some ships have tanks with inspection ports fitted through which a carterpump (or any other usable pump, can be inserted to pump the water from the deepst point of the tank (Water will always sink to the deepest point in the tank). Usually this works better then creating a tap hole in the tank, it also alllows for a visual inspection of the inside of the tank.

To prevent condensation (and hence the collection of water in your tanks) it's good practice to top-up your tanks before winter stowage.
